NOT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

                                         The Anti-Trump Fine Art Movement

Independent Curator Releases a Timely Collection in
Not Normal:  Art in the Age of Trump

SYRACUSE, New York – Sept. 4, 2020 – Artists around the United States are raging against Donald Trump in visual protest. Not Normal: Art in the Age of Trump documents this artistic movement in a curated collection that features the work of 142 artists and is a lasting visual documentation of the protest movement against President Trump and the climate he has created as our country’s 45th President.

Artist outrage is evidenced in full Technicolor on subjects ranging from xenophobia, racism, the COVID pandemic, promotion of hatred and violence, mistrust of science and facts, and misogyny. While the subject matter is serious, the art is alive with color and detail and many are delivered with an irreverent sense of humor.

Independent curator and author Karen M. Gutfreund said, “Hidden beneath the white noise of the 24-hour new cycle, a movement has started among the nation’s finest activist artists. This artistic form of protest is documented in this book which highlights the quality and volume of anti-Trump activist art. As a curator, I wanted to capture this collection in order to document this powerful form of peaceful protest.”

This collection features 350 works of fine art from artists around the United States and the world who have created pieces in many media including paintings, drawings, digital art, photography, mixed media, video, performance art and installations, all in direct protest of the Trump administration. These artists have united to address racism, the COVID Pandemic, immigration, government corruption and greed, gun rights, the climate crisis, misogyny and women’s and LBGTQ rights.

Gutfreund said, “We employ artwork to fight for all human rights and social justice because they are interrelated, interdependent and supposed to be— indivisible for all. In this “Age of Trump” rights are allotted to a privileged few, and we are burdened with a leadership that puts our country and the world at great risk. I created this collection because the subject matters portrayed in the works are timely, necessary and urgently needed to be seen in this “fake news” and “alternative facts” world. Through the immense diversity of these artists voices and art, my objective is to bring people into conversation about the current (not normal) state of affairs in the age of Trump and to showcase work that blends the personal and political.”

“Trump, aided by the Republican party, is the greatest threat to our democracy and planet. I use my wits and paintbrush as weapons against his regime and all the injustice they have spawned,” said Michael D’Antuono, one of the artists featured in the collection.

Rosemary Meza-DesPlas, another featured artist said, “Recent social movements, such as Black Lives Matter, Women’s March and #MeToo, have had a visceral impact on artists. With bellies full of righteous anger, artists seek to render societal atrocities hidden in plain sight: racial inequity, economic disparity, and gendered injustices.”

Karen M. Gutfreund is an independent curator and artist. Actively promoting the work of activist and feminist artists with national touring exhibitions, she has produced over thirty-five to date, managing all aspects from curation, artist and project management along with installation. She has worked in the Painting & Sculpture Department at MoMA, the Andre Emmerick Gallery, The Knoll Group, the John Berggruen Gallery, and is an art consultant to both corporations and individuals. Gutfreund served as the National Exhibitions Director for the Women’s Caucus for Art, is a member of ArtTable, the Northern California Representative for The Feminist Art Project (TFAP), and curator for UniteWomen.org. She is currently writing a book on DIY Exhibitions.
